Website Upgrades 12/26/2018

Campground & lodging mileage from the establishment to the trail was added yesterday.  Adventurer's Project's "Hiker Resources" web page had to be practically rebuilt to handle it.   Today, I added a mileage chart of the Road Fork and Whipple Section - Buckeye (off-road)/ North Country National Scenic Trail.  I won't touch the on-road, but that's much easier to use the "measurement" tool in the BTA's digital mapping on Avenza Maps there.

A link to my Generic Gear Inventory was created on the Hiker Resources web page.

Adventurer's Project 11/18/2018

I responded to an e-mail from an anonymous person who expressed interest in the Buckeye/ North Country Trail in Far SE Ohio.  But with their being anonymous, I have reservations regarding adding them to the registry of Adventurer's Project's supporters.  I might do it, but it seems incomplete?  I should probably ask if they wanted to be on the list because I'm going to have to add an unsubscribe method to email communications anyways.

How long will it take until Adventurer's Project completes it's current mission?  I'm anticipating that question because I just believe that it will come up somewhere and sometime?  The answer is that Adventurer's Project's objectives are not time based.  That's because there's too many unknowns right now.  The effort is more achievement and evolution based.  Our current volunteer procurement ratio is 100 days to 1 volunteer.  And I think that we need to halve that.  But that's the sort of thing that you learn from year one.  Right now, the more time that I dedicate to trail promotion diverts from maintenance.  And we have to be real careful about that ratio.

I'm somewhat mathematic about the way that I do things.  I think that it confuses some in the hiking community?  But I'm not sure what to do about it.  Somethings about Adventurer's Project are very well considered.  You have to factor in the objectives of the Buckeye Trail Association and weigh them with the conditions surrounding the local area.

There is somewhat of a road map for this kind of thing.  Let's just say that I've seen and heard of a few good examples.  And I know more about some of the nuances of getting a BTA chapter started than my counterparts were probably aware of.

I'd like Adventurer's Project to have a more moderate collective disposition.  And this is one thing that I think my training of others in the months and years to come will be essential?

I worked on Adventurer's Project's website today.  We've been having problems with it and the e-mail systems recently.  I found some parts of it internally that were incomplete.  I just hope with them being fixed now that in the months to come that we get a better reception from the outside world.

A couple days ago, I made a post on the Buckeye Trail Association's Facebook group regarding deer hunting hours and how we could miss the hunters if we hiked at night.  That gave me an idea where I posted on something about that topic.  At that point I realized that I've been one of the most prolific night hikers on the BT and it gave me the idea that I should try some soon for content on Adventurer's Project's Facebook page.

I'm trying to keep what audience we have interested through out the winter.  It's not an easy task because there's less going on in the cold days of the year.  At the moment, I have 965 photos available, but I'm not sure that I'll be able to use all of them?  Just for guesses, I believe that I'll only need about 90 of them?

It's like someone gathering firewood for their one and only heat source in the winter.  During the warm days, instead of firewood, it's pictures and video.  Right now, I'm contemplating starting a YouTube Channel for Adventurer's Project.  Our pictures are hosted on the Facebook page, which is can be seen by those who don't have a profile.  But Facebook will "nag" them to get one.  I'm contemplating having another host for them, but it's got to integrate into the Facebook page to avoid redundancy on the volunteer end for us?  For that, we might need an Instagram account?

On My Plate Now

So what's on my plate now?  Well, the things that come to mind are setting up my data that I've generated at home port to go on the road now.  I've actually got two letters requesting maintenance help from the Boy Scouts of America on National Trails Day.  The website is on hold until I can talk to the BTA at TrailFest later next month.  The trail manuals need a little proofreading.  That's something that I'd rather do at a local coffee shop.  Some of the events that I have tentatively scheduled.

The motorhome's tile floor is probably going in on Tuesday.  I believe that my mechanic has finished?  But there are some vanity items that have yet to be put up.  I have to diagnose an electrical problem.  The dashboard, turn signals and forward marker lights don't work.  All at once, that sounds like a fuse to me?  But I might have a wiring problem?  And if so, there's a three way junction at the driver's side marker light that I may have miswired?  I believe that the rears are working, but I have to check again.

I checked the breaker switches and so far, that weak one seems like it's suddenly better.  But I can't find my replacement breaker switch that I'm sure that I purchased, so maybe I did it already.  The converter's face place was never secured and from what I see, it's because one of the switches is rocked out.  If I can get it in place, then it will need some mounting screws.  This is the sort of thing that I like doing with the motorhome in Lowe's or Home Depot's parking lot.  Because if you get the wrong screws, you don't have to go far to get new ones.  And I plan on having the auxiliary batteries replaced first thing tomorrow.

The caulking on the front windows was one of the last things that I did.  But it didn't hold up and caused a slight leak.  Considering that I'm going to move it on Tuesday, I'm going to hold off until I get it back into storage that day to re-caulk those, then put a tarp over the nose for a few days to let it properly hue.

Adventurer's Project Upcoming Website

I'm still working on the transportation map for Adventurer's Project.  Since these are for planning purposes, all of it's maps are going to feature tracks from the BTA GIS/ GPS Depository.  I already have those split into sections.  And I might be able to make the maps themselves impossible to download with embedded data.  This data can be used for planning purposes.  But there's lots of things that I can I can give out.  Basically, if it isn't covered under the copyright of the map and guides, I can do it.  And I fully intend to.

(Currently, Adventurer's Project is covering Road Fork and Whipple Sections of the Buckeye/ North Country Trail.  As of this morning, I learned that Lyft's "Columbus Area" is now covering all of it.  I've been trying to get transportation from it's east end in the Marietta Unit of the Wayne NF for resupply for many years.  And since we lost our shuttle service, this is welcome news.)

Other than Lyft, other items I'd like to include are:

- Resupply locations
- Public Transit

- One item that I'd like to expound on is ride share locations.  Not everywhere on those sections has cellular service.  And if a ride, or rider is coming from out of the area and something happens, the other party would be in the dark.  So, I'll be devising rendezvous locations that have signal for most providers.

- Contact for resupply is a feature that the hiker should do well in advance of their hike.  This is where Adventurer's Project volunteers would have resupply waiting for hikers at the end of their day.

- The "Surface Water Data" pertains to streams that aren't likely to be directly affected by mining activity.

- Annual Fall Foliage Tour map pertains to a two day event in October held by the Little Muskingum Watershed Association.  It's an automotive tour that takes place on OH-26 annually and passes through two small portions of the on-road trail.

- A link to the Marietta/ Washington Convention and Visitor's Bureau.  This part of the Buckeye Trail is one of the more difficult parts of the trail to get to for Ohio residents.  If they come to hike, they might like to explore Marietta?

- A vacant segment showcase.

- Weather Band Radio (channels and frequencies)

- GPS data on religious places along Road Fork and Whipple

Hiking & Trail Agency Ical's

One suggestion that I have for trail agencies is that they switch their website calendars to something like Google, or Yahoo for instance that embeds to the webpage.  Then restrict access to a number of people who can post to it.  But with the services that I just mentioned, they can have Ical address.  And end users can subscribe to the trail agency's calendar and it will appear on their own.

The advantage to doing this is that instead of having to go to the agency's website to check for an event, this information comes to them.  Furthermore, those with smartphones can access this as well.  These are business devices and they are compelled to set up a service anyways.  If something goes wrong with the phone, they won't loose the dates that they programmed into the calendar.  But these apps can be set to synchronize with the calendar on-line at specified intervals.  So even if the hiker looses data cellular signal, they'll still probably have the event and maybe the opportunity to walk into it and participate.

Log 2014031101

The Lima/ Allen County Regional Transit Authority (ACRTA) receptionist informs me that their routes to Delphos and Spencerville of Allen County have been discontinued.

Other than that, I sent a message via web form today to the Monroe County government asking for contact information regarding the Monroe County Public Transit.  Their website on the Ohio Transit Links webpage for the American Public Transportation Association came back in some Asian language.  And many of the links on that page are broken, or link to 404 errors.
